Summary

Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Gene Luen Yang, New Kid is a timely, honest graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real, from award-winning author-illustrator Jerry Craft。

Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life。 But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade。

As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one。 Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?

Ok so, I didn't really think much of this book and I didn't enjoy it that much。 The book itself wasn't bad but [in my opion] it was pretty stereotypical。 Ok so, I didn't really think much of this book and I didn't enjoy it that much。 The book itself wasn't bad but [in my opion] it was pretty stereotypical。 。。。more

This was another pick by the Seattle Public Libraries for the global reading challenge。 I loved it and continue to be impressed with the SPL selections。 This is a graphic novel that follows the experience of students of color at a predominantly white and wealthy private school in New York。 It’s a good introduction for kids on systematic racism within the educational system, and shows many examples of micro-aggressions that students of color face every day。 Definitely worth a read, and can lead t This was another pick by the Seattle Public Libraries for the global reading challenge。 I loved it and continue to be impressed with the SPL selections。 This is a graphic novel that follows the experience of students of color at a predominantly white and wealthy private school in New York。 It’s a good introduction for kids on systematic racism within the educational system, and shows many examples of micro-aggressions that students of color face every day。 Definitely worth a read, and can lead to some important conversations in the classroom or around the dinner table。 。。。more

A wonderfully sensitively written and beautifully illustrated guide to the biases that are rooted in everyone。 Jerry Craft is a great story teller, artist, and educator。 Bravo Mr。 Craft!

In the book New Kid, the author shows how skin color can affect how people treat you and see you。 When the boy goes to a new school that is richer and better than his older school, people treat him differently。 In class, when the teacher mentions financial support, everyone seems to stare at the only two African Americans in class。 This shows how people think that because of their skin color, they need financial help。 The book goes through and explains to the reader through pictures and words, h In the book New Kid, the author shows how skin color can affect how people treat you and see you。 When the boy goes to a new school that is richer and better than his older school, people treat him differently。 In class, when the teacher mentions financial support, everyone seems to stare at the only two African Americans in class。 This shows how people think that because of their skin color, they need financial help。 The book goes through and explains to the reader through pictures and words, how it is a real life problem people deal with at school, home, etc。 。。。more

This graphic novel is really inspiring。 When the new kid enters school, he has to face multiple real world problems。 Bullies。 Racism。 Cliques。 However, new kid always takes the right (and sometimes long) path to solving these problems, helping him overcome awkwardness and bringing light to himself。 I really hope other people will read this G。N。 and enjoy it。

I loved this graphic novel。 It was fun and meaningful without being the stereotypical storyline that is always imposed on black kids (which this book addresses as being problematic)。 The parts between the racist teacher (named Karen lol) and Jordan are well-done。。。 It is sad that the teacher never understands her wrong in the end。 But it's a reality, and the author does a good job speaking to that reality。 It had a great balance of humor, real talk about racism/the struggles that young black peo I loved this graphic novel。 It was fun and meaningful without being the stereotypical storyline that is always imposed on black kids (which this book addresses as being problematic)。 The parts between the racist teacher (named Karen lol) and Jordan are well-done。。。 It is sad that the teacher never understands her wrong in the end。 But it's a reality, and the author does a good job speaking to that reality。 It had a great balance of humor, real talk about racism/the struggles that young black people go through everyday, normal everyday kid problems, and coming-of-age-ness。 The witty references in the chapter titles were a great touch too。 。。。more

I expected way more from this after knowing it won a Newberry Award and has massive hype。 Its a good story about fitting in at a new school and navigating all the challenges that come with that territory, but its nothing memorable。

I enjoyed this book a lot, I think people have misconstrued graphic novels for having easy topics to read, but this books is so much more than that。 It not only deals with being the new kid at an almost all white school, but it also shows different racism kids in minorities have to deal with。 This book shows that there is more meaning to graphic novels then people think。

Wendy

Good representation of life for minorities。

Adam

Very well done middle school graphic novel about judgment and bias and micro aggressions。

Loved this book。 I love all the ways exclusion and bullying are shown and dealt with, not just amongst the kids, but the staff as well。 The world needs more books like this。 This is the kind of that helps others to understand different points of view, without shoving it down your throat。 It teaches, but never preaches。 Seriously, go read it。

This book seemed to promote just as many stereotypes as it tried to dispel。 I did think it portrayed what it feels like to be a new kid pretty well。 Being an army brat, I was a new kid several times。 I liked that Jordan created thoughtful and funny graphic short stories in his sketchbook to sort out his new kid/new school struggles。

i picked five stars because its a good book but also shows how the world is to younger gernerations and i think other people should read this because its a good but book but also tells a story about how racism and how africans and other people are treated today in our socitey。 i think they should have made it longer to show through bad but end all the way at the good not half way at good and i also think that since its a graphic novel they should add more kid examples。This book shows people but i picked five stars because its a good book but also shows how the world is to younger gernerations and i think other people should read this because its a good but book but also tells a story about how racism and how africans and other people are treated today in our socitey。 i think they should have made it longer to show through bad but end all the way at the good not half way at good and i also think that since its a graphic novel they should add more kid examples。This book shows people but mainly younger generations on the promblems in the world and the things we need to fix to make our socity better in the book there called diffirent names and said that there on finacal aid and that this proves on how we people judge black people on apperances and by stories wev'e heard and the decisions we make has an impact on others so we need to show people how not to be racist。 I feel like at the end when everything comes together I think they were trying to show us a chance in the future we may have of being and living together。 Our actions are our promblems then our punishment is the thing you get for making bad decisions 。。。more

Love graphic novels。 I can read some in one sitting and live the form of escapism it offers。 Love that I can borrow graphic novels on my Kindle where the colors are so vibrant。 Very talented graphic artist。 A story about an eighth grade African American teen who lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of NYC but gets in on a financial scholarship to an elite private school with a predominantly white student body and his struggles to assimilate。

This book caught my attention because of all the prestigious awards on its front cover。 The text at the back of book includes 'Ages 8-12'。 And I thought maybe my 9 year old nephew might like it。I liked how the story addressed discrimination in a private school setting: rich vs。 poor, white vs。 black/those from other racial and ethnic backgrounds, popular kids vs。 the uncool', teacher vs。 student, etc。 In the dialogue, Craft incorporated relevant pop cultural references — Amulet, Star Wars, Batma This book caught my attention because of all the prestigious awards on its front cover。 The text at the back of book includes 'Ages 8-12'。 And I thought maybe my 9 year old nephew might like it。I liked how the story addressed discrimination in a private school setting: rich vs。 poor, white vs。 black/those from other racial and ethnic backgrounds, popular kids vs。 the uncool', teacher vs。 student, etc。 In the dialogue, Craft incorporated relevant pop cultural references — Amulet, Star Wars, Batman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and many others。 While the appropriateness of these popular entertainment media (individually or collectively depending on the parents' choice of upbringing) might be up for discussion, I thought it was interesting how these references could grab the interest of the reader or tickle their curiosity or even just merely raise their awareness, much like characters in Craft's story who had no idea what the other kids were talking about sometimes。 The family dynamic between the protagonist and his parents, and grandfather is depicted tenderly and masterfully。 The story does not necessarily have a 'conflict' in the narrative, and centers around the protagonist's character development, which I thought was subtle and sweet。 The illustrations include glimpses into the protagonist's sketchbook, and overall the artwork is simple yet witty and wonderful。 Would recommend。 。。。more

This book is educational and heartwarming, and teaches younger teens about the effects of racism, and gives people of color who live in communities that are not very diverse。I loved it!

I really enjoyed how the author emphasized racism through the graphic novel in a relatable way to teens as it was set in middle school。 There were many issues and struggles displayed as well; not only racism。 I liked the artwork and the development of the characters was portrayed nicely as well。

I just read this in one sitting on my deck in the sunshine。 Maybe that contributed to my 5 star rating! The dialogue made me laugh out loud a few times。 I like that it's suitable for elementary grades, yet it makes you think。 Now I just need to go back and figure out which book is being referenced in the title page of each chapter。。。 I just read this in one sitting on my deck in the sunshine。 Maybe that contributed to my 5 star rating! I wanted to read this graphic novel because it captures two issues that are important to me, racism and having to move schools。This graphic novel was probably one of the best contemporary fiction stories I have read in a very long time。 It is cleverly written and introduces discussions on microaggressions and bias。 The message is that important。 And it’s wrapped up in a fun and interesting story telling method。 Adults and children alike will find some humor as they see the relevance in the prese I wanted to read this graphic novel because it captures two issues that are important to me, racism and having to move schools。This graphic novel was probably one of the best contemporary fiction stories I have read in a very long time。 It is cleverly written and introduces discussions on microaggressions and bias。 The message is that important。 And it’s wrapped up in a fun and interesting story telling method。 Adults and children alike will find some humor as they see the relevance in the present day situations Jordan experiences。 The microaggressions throughout the novel is a great launching pad to use for discussions inside classrooms。 It was, in this white person's view, authentic in capturing some of the difficulties of school programs that attempt to "diversify" by bringing in students of color but then openly acknowledging they are "scholarship kids。" These kids made the most of it and really nailed their teachers on some of the things they said。 As for changing schools, it's always hard, as I learned when I was a teen。 Even without some of the other stressors and pitfalls, it requires a kid to become socially adept, in a sometimes superficial way。 。。。more

This book is one of the best books I've ever read。 It's diverse, talks a lot about things that actually happen, is a comic book but isn't like most comics, and is just an incredible book。 Same with the second one, class act。 They are both incredible books and I can't wait until the next one comes out!
